Being Indonesia: Imaginations of the Nation among Young People in Jakarta, Banda Aceh and Kupang

Abstrack:

The ongoing study aims to obtain a better comprehension of how young people (age 17-26) in Jakarta, Kupang and Banda Aceh construct the idea of Indonesia and how they experience ?being Indonesian?. Indonesia?s unity despite its vastness and diversity has puzzled scholars (i.e. Brown, 2003; Emmerson, 2005; Elson, 2008) and numerous studies have shown how its trajectory is shaped by scores of contestations regarding what ?Indonesia? is and how it should be. During the New Order the imagination of ?Indonesia? was indoctrinated through a rigid top-down approach, but after its end a little over a decade ago many of the identities and narratives of Indonesia that had been previously suppressed came to the surface. What is of interest is how amidst this plethora of narratives and possible identities, young people understand, experience and give meaning to ?Indonesia?. What does ?Indonesia? mean to them? What are the other narratives that inform their narrative of the nation? To take into account the diverse and different imaginations of Indonesia, three cities (Jakarta, Kupang and Banda Aceh) have been chosen as research sites, each with their own particular historical and socio-cultural structure. To obtain imaginations that are not merely drawn from official discourses while at the same time facilitating talks about an issue as abstract as the nation, interviews were conducted by asking informants to comment on or tell stories about a set of photos, a method also known as ?photo-elicitation?. By doing so, there is a tangible centre of attention, whereas the polysemic nature of pictures avoids questions with value-laden words such as ?nation? or ?nationalism? and so somewhat decreases the chance of interviewer bias. Pictures chosen are those depicting scenes that potentially elicit commentaries related to the nation (for example; a komodo dragon, advertisement for a football match where Manchester United?s players are portrayed wearing batik, Timor Leste?s flag, a classic ?classroom photograph? of Suharto etc). Some photos that depict specific scenes found in one site were shown to the interviewees in that respective city only. Using this method, at least 25 young people in each city have been interviewed. Aside from a description of the background and methodology of the research, tentative conclusions will be presented. Comparing the narratives obtained in the three cities, it is relatively safe to infer that the nation is imagined differently in different ?communities?, spatially as well as in terms of its history. In Jakarta, unsurprisingly, the idea of Indonesia as a cohesive nation is stronger and more uncontested than elsewhere. The international world is often used as the point of reference to define what ?Indonesia? is. In Kupang, ?Indonesia? is viewed as consisting of a center on which the peripheries depend, with Kupang perceived as positioned in the latter. Youngsters in Kupang as well as in Jakarta have similar constructions of Indonesia?s recent history. It is among young people in Aceh that ?Indonesia? as a historically and culturally justifiable entity, is most problematic. read more

MULTICULTURAL-BASED ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING: ONE WAY OF MAINTAINING NATION IDENTITY

Abstrack:

This particular study proposes one alternative way of conducting English Language Teaching practices while maintaining the nation identity. It is commonly believed that learning a foreign language cannot be effectively carried out without learning its culture. This may lead to the internalization process of other culture. Foreign language learners may unintentionally learn other culture while learning the language not to mention English. This therefore will contribute to the elimination of our national cultural values and norms by our next generation. Educators need to be aware of this fact in order to actively take part in maintaining learners? awareness of their own culture. This particular study has a deep analysis on three main issues, namely, 1) identifying the common mainstream of English Language Teaching practice in Indonesia, particularly in the domain of accompanied culture, 2) identifying the notion of multicultural education, 3) and to what extent this multicultural education takes parts in maintaining the nation identity. The main approach underlying this study is multicultural perspective. This perspective is used as the basis of analysis. This perspective commonly deals with ideals of social justice, education equity, and a dedication to facilitating educational experiences in which all students reach their full potential as learners and as socially aware and active beings, locally, nationally, and globally. The results of this study have shown the following findings. Firstly, the practice of ELT in Indonesia has internalized the western cultural values and norms. Secondly, multicultural education is an idea in education that enables all learners regardless of their gender, ethnicity, race, culture, social class, religion, or exceptionality, have an equal opportunity to learn at school. Thirdly, by applying this multicultural perspective in the practice of English Language Teaching, the learners will acquire attitudes, knowledge, and skills needed to successfully function within their own micro-culture, mainstream culture, and the global community. read more

The Impact of Role Overload, Inter-role Conflict, and Coping Behavior: An Examination of Gender Differences in Academic Accountants

Abstrack:

One of the most striking phenomena in recent years has been the increasing proportion of women in the labor force, enabling women in many fields to use their potential and to achieve economic independence. This phenomenon raises the gender issues, in particular job promotion, compensation, and professional responsibility. Therefore, the gender structure analysis becomes more and more important to society and economic development. Accounting research lacks the study of gender issues. It is important to understand the career advancement prospects from gender standpoint. This study examines the impact of gender on role overload, inter-role conflict, and coping behavior. The study also considers factors associated with gender perspectives to build role of academic accountant in workplace. Hypotheses are developed and tested through a survey study among 53 academic accountants in Semarang public universities. Our results show that there are no significant gender differences in role overload, inter-role conflict, and coping behavior; however, women are perceived to have more favorable chances to use reactive coping behavior than men. This is consistent with prior research (Reed et al., 1994) which suggests that women accountants expressing preferences with closely associated actual behavior. We found that coping behavior play an important role in determining the appropriate solution strategy to overcome role overload and inter-role conflict by concerning the redefinitive and accommodative approach. In addition, we found that attribution value of individual behavior align with the attribution theory generally, which is needed to verify the cause and effect relationship of individual behavior. This finding consistent with literature (Gibson, 1994) which describes three factors in attribution determinant, they are: consensus, distinctiveness, and consistency. Overall, the paper contributes to the extant literature on behavioral accounting by providing empirical evidence in terms of the effectiveness of human resources management in higher educational institutions. Further, in gender issue, this study complements prior research to explore the preventive steps in discrimination perception among academic accountants in workplace. Suggestions regarding areas for future research are offered, and implications for practitioners are identified. read more

SOCIAL INTERACTION AND INTERNET-BASED COMMUNICATION

Abstrack:

The use of internet as a part of Indonesian?s daily life has been tremendous. Businessmen, professionals, housewives, teens and even small kids use internet as a media of communication and a part of modern lifestyle through cell phones and personal computers. Other persons in different place now can be reached in no time and internet also opens new opportunities. However, family member now realize that new technology does not always bring happiness. More and more family connection and social relationship has loosened and more kids become internet-addicted. Children skip school, neglect their daily duties, have less contact with other family members and enter a new world under their own control. How does the new technology shape a new social change in Indonesia? How do people create interaction and interpret meanings through the internet? Will it lead to joint action? New technology has advantages and disadvantages. As long as the benefit is beyond the expense, there is no reason to be resistant to new change in life. With internet, people can expand their horizon and create meaningful actions. Despite its disadvantages, internet has formed a new kind of society that is different with the conventional society based on geographical boundaries. Symbolic interactionism theory from GH Mead is used to analyze this phenomenon. Since this theory was developed before the emergence of internet, it is necessary to modify and exercise different method. According to Mead and written by Blumer (1969:2), there are three premises in the theory: first premise is that human being act toward things on the basis of the meanings that the things have for them. The second premise is that the meanings of such thing is derived from or arise out of the social interaction that one has followed. The third premise is that these meanings are handled in, and modified through, an interpretative process used by person in dealing with the things. Preliminary analysis on this research shows that internet has enhanced the social interaction and joint action among its users. At the same time, some others still argue that the internet has widened the gap among family members. read more

A LEARNING MODEL IN THE TRAINING OF CREATIVE THINKING TO INCREASE THE COMPETENCE OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION TUTORS

Abstrack:

This research is a development of a training model for the early childhood education tutors through the training of creative thinking, a training model which is aimed to (1) increase the competence of early childhood education by using the training of creative thinking in which its learning is different from conventional training; (2) increase the tutors? ability in implementing the results of the training of creative thinking; and (3) find out the effectiveness of the training model of creative thinking which eventually affects the learning process in the early childhood education class, it is expected that through the training of creative thinking, the tutors become more independent in preparing the educative game instruments and training facilities by using the available local potentials. The main aim of this research is the creation of a training model which will be used as a manual or guide for the training of early childhood education tutors. The subjects of this research are the early childhood education tutors who had received the beginner level training which was conducted by the legal institution, namely the Educational Service, especially the Informal Education Division, by considering the homogeneity of tutors? ability which will be grouped into two classes in which one class will receive the treatment of creative thinking training. Meanwhile the control class will not receive the treatment or only will receive the conventional training. This research is using the research and development method with several phases, namely (a) Researching and collecting information through readings or literatures, conducting observation, and preparing report about the development requirements; (b) Planning the components prototype which will be developed, including defining the skill (ability) which will be developed, formulating the aims, deciding the sequence of activities, and special measure scale; (c) Developing the first prototype, such as preparing the text books and evaluation tools; (d) Applying limited experiments to the first model, such as applying it to two groups and involving 20 subjects. Conducting observations, interviews, and questionnaires, then the data are analyzed to perfect the first model; (e) Revising the first model, which is done based on the results of tests and analysis of the first model; (f) Conducting the second phase experiment; (g) Then conducting observations, interviews, and questionnaires of other data exploration method, especially to the criterion variable. The results are evaluated and, when possible, comparing it with the control group. The result from the research are the experiment class who used creative thinking model has a high score more better than control class score who used conventional method. The data showed that both pretest score has a same grade or the other word are that both class are has the same competence that showed with 55-56 score, but after the experiment class used the creative training model this class has a high score more better than a control class. read more

Effect of air jet cooling on surface roughness and tool wear

Abstrack:

The use of cutting fluid is to reduce the friction, transport of chips, cleaning of tools and thus the generation of heat and dissipate the generated heat. Application of cutting fluid also improves the quality of the workpiece by continually removing metal fines and cuttings from the tool and cutting zone. To date, large amounts of inefficient cutting fluid which cause both environmental damage and health hazards have had to be used. Due to this problem, some alternative has been sought to minimize or avoid the use of cutting fluid in machining operations. Some of these alternatives are machining with Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL), air jet cooling and dry machining. After MQL method has been carried out by many of researcher, air jet cooling is being trialled as possible solution to metal cutting operations. From economics of view, used air jet cooling is more efficient than MQL. The main goal of this work is to investigate the use of air jet cooling on surface roughness and tool wear on machining operation. Effect and mechanism in air jet cooling are investigated by used of a turning process. AISI 1010 was used as the workpiece material. Surface roughness was measured for twelve different air jet pressure, changing from 0.5 bar until 6 bar at two different air jet positions. Initial results the use of air jet cooling with proper selection of position and pressure, it is possible to reduced tool wear and increased surface roughness. read more
