YOUTH, TAREKAT, AND RELIGIOUS DERADICALIZATION IN INDONESIA THE ACTIVISM OF MAHASISWA AHLITH THARIQAH AL MU’TABARAH AN NAHDLIYYAH (MATAN)

  • Author: Zulfan Taufik
  • From: STAI Nur El-Ghazy Bekasi ‘Youth Studies Institute

Abstract:

Nowadays, the relationship between youth and religious radicalism becomes a hot spot along the phenomenon of their increasing involvement in various acts of violence in the name of religion. Many reports indicate a significant increase in radicalization among young people led by terrorist organizations, both internationally and locally. In contrast to various studies that favor the study of contemporary Muslim youth relations with religious radicalism, this paper focuses on youth activism in stemming the flow of radicalism through tarekat (sufi order). In Indonesia, tarekat began to be an alternative choice in offsetting the current of radicalization that massively targeted the young. One of his concrete forms appears in the Mahasiswa Ahlith Thariqah Al Mu’tabarah An Nahdliyyah (MATAN). Using phenomenology, this study looks at MATAN that designed as a youth organization specifically based on the tarekat mu’tabarah in response to the phenomenon of radicalism and positivism among students and youth. The results show that MATAN seeks to balance the intellectuality and spirituality among youth with a claim of loyalty to the moderate, tolerant, inclusive and consistent (in shari’a, tariqa, and ma’rifa) as well as maintaining state awareness based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution. This last point then animates every MATAN fellow to be awake towards religious radicalization efforts. In the end, the findings of this study confirm some studies and surveys conducted in the context of Morocco, Algeria, and Mali which concluded that the tarekat is a new fondness and is believed to be the savior of youth from religious extremism. read more

DEVELOPING A RELATIONSHIP MODEL BETWEEN PARENTS AND SCHOOLS IN HANDLING STUDENT BRAWLS IN YOGYAKARTA

  • Author: Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Darwin (Magister Studi Kebijakan)
  • From: Magister Studi Kebijakan

Abstract:

Student brawls that lead to criminal activities called klithih (a Javanese term for violence among teenage students) is currently rampant in Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY). This condition cannot be separated from the weakening role of families and schools in nurturing the students. In general, teenagers need their existence to be acknowledged in their struggle for identity. Their self and group existence needs to be shown, so that other teenagers or groups will not look down on them. The teenagers? failure in the process of their identity search is what plunges them in deviant behaviors such as engaging in brawls. The rapid social change through information technology and the cultural change from agrarian to industrial society are suspected to be the causes of the waning parenting and relations among family members. The parenting style that initially focused on families when society was agrarian has shifted to a style that delegates the parenting role to the formal education in the current industrial society. In light of this situation, this research aimed to develop a model of relationships between students? parents and schools in order to handle student brawls. This research utilized a qualitative and a quantitative approach with descriptive analysis technique. The result showed that 65.6% of the community of Yogyakarta stated or agreed that group violence especially klithih had increased in the last year, and the main cause was the weakening role of parents (65.5%) and schools (39.6% %). The negative action, klithih, is a manifestation of improper identity searching because it demonstrates a lack of self-control. The process of searching for self-identity among teenagers requires assistance from the closest people, especially family. However, some informants whose children were involved in klithih stated that they did not need to accompany and guide their teenage children in searching their identity because they believed that their children should be independent. Therefore, efforts must be made to create a good synergy between the school and parents in handling student brawls. One example is improving good communication between the two parties in coaching and supervising teenage students, especially through a model of personal communication involving information technology. read more

  • Author: Andi Rifani
  • From: Student at The Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada

Abstract:

This research is aimed to know (1) Spatial pattern of land surface temperature, (2) Relationship between land surface temperature with cover terrain, and (3) Relationship between land surface temperature and the vegetation density of Makassar City in 1999, 2010 and 2015. This research using Landsat imagery data ETM+ and LDCM Landsat covered Makassar City. Variable of this research is land surface temperature from band thermal LWIR, land cover obtained by guidance classification use (maximum likelihood algorithm), and vegetation density that is obtained from result processing of Landsat band NIR and Visible Red in 1999, 2010 and 2015. Analysis results at this research show that (1) Spatial temperature land surface temperature of Makassar City be spread evenly but more dominant at the south part (2) Correlation of Land Surface Temperature and NDVI vegetation density indicate reverse relationship, which mean is the higher vegetation density so the lower surface temperature in Makassar City. (3) The highest surface temperature in Makassar City occurred on 2015 with 36,68oC in average tend to concentrate at central city with terrain cover is built areal. read more
