  • Author: Mochammad Maola
  • From: CRCS UGM

Abstract:

Ecological crisis is demanding solution from various aspect. While religion as a promising resource to influence it?s follower. A lot of researchs about Islam and ecologcial issue are proof that Islam also concerns with environmental crisis. Many Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) identify themselves as environmentalist or ecological pesantren which taught the students about ecological issue. The problem among the research about Islam and ecology is less of reference from specific Islamic literature which talking about Islam related with ecology. Neither it can’t be found in pesantren which taught ecology. Mostly refers with english writing or primary sources from Al-Qur’an Hadith book. The other is refer with fiqh bi`ah (the jurisprudence of environment) wich only limited in Islamic law toward environment. One of the famous book is from Yusuf Qardawi entitled Ri?ayat al-Bi`ah fi Shariat al-Islam. I argue that Islam has propose a solution which has manifested by Prophet Muhammad activities and words toward environment. The book of Habl min al-‘Alam is a compilation of 40 hadiths from Prophet Muhammad which consist of his teaching on treating environment. The book is written by the author for the purpose of education, not for profit purpose. It’s taught in pesantren, for junior high school grades and older. This book is more simple but consist more topics rather than limited to jurisprudence view even also the theological teaching and manner. The contains of this book is focused on overconsumption, nature resources, treating animal, reforestation, sanitation, etc. The research is designed in qualitative ways which the subject was observed through focus group discussion, teaching the book and discussion, and then observed again through focus group discussion. The purpose of this research is to educate ecology for pesantren student and their reponses toward the book to find out the effectiveness of the book toward pesantren student also the strength and weakness before it is published and spreaded to be taught in other pesantren. The result shows that the informants arguing the quality of author, as they convince the book is lack of barakah, absence of sanad and hadith status. Therefore, the informants are prefer to focus on the hadith science rather than the ecological teaching in the book. It can be concluded that the book is need improvement to attract the students attention toward ecological issue.

METHANE ENRICHMENT OF BIOGAS BY CARBON DIOXIDE ADSORPTION ON NATURAL ZEOLITE AND BIOCHAR DERIVED FROM CHICKEN MANURE

  • Authors: Margaretha Arnita Wuri
  • From: Master Program of Technology for Sustainable Development, Department of Environmental Science, The Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada

Abstract:

Although biogas is claimed clean and environmental friendly, its existence is often unsustainable especially in rural area. Consumption energy still dominated by energy from fossil fuel because it?s cheaper, higher in energy efficiency and more ready to use than biogas. The efforts to make biogas can compete with fossil fuel energy had been done by increasing calorific value. The lower calorific value is due to the presence of carbon dioxide (CO2) in biogas. Reduction of CO2 by adsorption is able to enhance calorific value that evidenced by methane (CH4) enrichment. In this report, we investigated the effect of zeolite (Z-Z) and combination of zeolite-biochar from chicken manure without or with modification (Z-A1U dan Z-A1N) on CO2 and CH4 contents. These adsorbents were characterized by infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR) and surface area analyzer (SAA). FTIR spectra showed that functional groups of zeolite were represented by Si-O or Al-O bands at 1050, 796, 466 cm-1. Zeolite?s spesific surface area was 27,9 m2/g and pores width were dominated at 2,67 nm. The other hand, modified biochar showed the typical bands of nitorgenous group at 1039, 1047 and 1079 cm-1 that confirmed vibration of C-N streching. A board peak at 3393 and 1799 cm-1 corresponded to N-H and C=O band respectively. The result indicated that there was interaction between biochar and ammonia. Adsorption was carried out at room temperature with gas pressure ranging from 2 to 7 kg/cm2. Before and after adsorption, biogas were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) to determine the effect adsorbent against CO2 and CH4 contents. read more

SUSTAINABLE CAVE TOURISM ENVIRONMENT USING CAVE ECOSYSTEM PROFILE: CASE STUDY OF COKRO CAVE, GEOPARK GUNUNG SEWU

  • Author: Hilary Reinhart
  • From: Master of Environmental Management, Graduate School, Universitas Gadjah Mada

Abstract:

With their high value and various features, caves can be easily overexploited by mismanagement of caves. One of the utilization of caves are to be used as tourism sites. Cokro cave is one of the cave in Geopark Gunung Sewu which had been a tourism site. Initiated by local people, it had developed and become one of the favorite site to be visited. With its unique and fragile ecosystem, it is very important to assess and recognizing features and the characteristics of caves. One of the methods used is Cave Ecosystem Profile. This method is chosen because its simplicity and interdisciplinary in assessing the cave and the visual result. It uses ecosystem by inventorying physical and biotical features and building correlation among them. The inventory then will be visualized in a cave map to show the spatial distribution of those features along the cave passage. From the inventory, management will be able to choose the right strategy in keeping all of those features. The inventory of the physical features are including the speleothems, speleogens, sediments, passages form and all of the geomorphological process and aspects. Speleothems found are stalactites, flowstones including gourdam. The passage forms consists of chamber and collapse. These physical features become attraction and habitat for the microchiropteras, arachnids, rhaphidophoridae, and swallows. In every single habitat, disturbance from the tourist will affect the biota and the geological features. To minimizing the impacts, some behavioral protocols and modifications are necessary to be made as conservation strategies. All of these are summarized and visualized using Cave Ecosystem Map. read more

HARMONY FROM MOUNTAIN SAGARA

  • Author: Wijanarto
  • From: SPK Angkatan VIII Tahun 2016 CRCS UGM

Abstract:

Brebes Regency, as manifestation of diversity, is reflected in the almost forgotten messages of archaeological traces and philological texts. Traditional historiography proclaims that the identity of Brebes and social solidarity of watang-aneng-tengah cultural philosophy are ways that do not contrast social identity in each community. The discontinuity is overlaid with a marking of prohibition that the Cipamali river symbolizes (word Pemali of which meaning is prohibition in Sundanese). The text of Bujangga Manik mentions that Cipamali has become the boundary of two tribes, namely: Javanese and Sundanese, stated as follows: Sadatang ka tung tung Sunda Meuntasing di Cipamali Datang ka alas Jawa The name of Arya Bangah was also written in Babad Tanah Jawa as Jaka Suruh?s brother who was involved in the conflict with Ciung Wanara who became the King of Sunda while Arya Bangah reflects the story of separation between the Javanese and the Sundanese (Ajip Rosidi, 1984: 143). And, the separation limit is located in Cipamali, Brebes Regency. The neglect of historical and cultural messages makes the issue of multicultural conflict understood in the present dimension, without learning from historical narratives. Brebes has been spelled it out through historical messages. One of them is the harmony of Mountain Sagara. The area of Mountain Sagara extends from Ketanggungan, Banjarharjo and Salem subdistricts. In historical perspective, Mountain Sagara is an identity that reflects the tension between the plateau (mountain) and the sea (Sugeng Priyadi, 2009: 86). Mountain Sagara is referred to as the territory once visited by the King of Majapahit, Hayam Wuruk, as mentioned in Negarakertagama. In Javanese cosmology, the sea-mountain is the balance of two contradictory or binary oppositions (Nakagawa, 2000: 58). The meaning of the balance of Mountain Sagara is also known in Dewa Ruci puppet play when Bima was looking for Tirta Pawitra. Oral traditions preach in Mount Sagara is associated with the text of Sand Sindhula. It tells about King Watugunung of the Gilingwesi Kingdom. The linking of Mountain Sagara with the Babad Sand Sindhula proves that there is the meeting of three cultures located in the following regions, namely: Brebes, Cilacap and Banjarpatroman. The three regions represent the boundary of Javanese and Sundanese cultures. Representation of plurality and appreciation of local virtues are manifested in a number of symbol markers that are often overlooked. Another example of the meaning of onion becomes a symbol of Brebes Regency. The phrase of onion as a cultural philosophy is summarized in the expression floating lembah manah (Tjakraningrat, 1979; 113). The Song of Yogawedha teaches red onions as human humility: Punapa tak jampinipun Godhong pasrah ing Hyang Widi Berambang lembahing manah Temu temunahing ati Adas uyah siring nala Mung selawat puji dhikir This study will examine the importance of traditional folklore, archeology and historiography in understanding that the process of diversity has surfaced in historical dynamics. The point of our historical narrative is shown harmony and moral message about how to understand and menant the side of humanism as one of the dirt in the life of society, state and nation, which is experiencing torn apart. read more
