Introduction
The rapid pace of urbanization, the increasing impacts of the climate crisis, economic instability, and transnational tensions in global systems present planetary challenges that require a comprehensive and integrated approach. Resilience, defined as the ability of societies, cities, ecosystems, and economies to adapt, recover, and thrive in the face of disruptions, has become a crucial priority in addressing these interconnected global issues. The 13th International Graduate Students and Scholars’ Conference in Indonesia aims to tackle these challenges by promoting a multidimensional understanding of resilience, which includes urban, ecological, technological, political, social, economic, and other intersectoral aspects.
The interconnectedness of key areas such as urban resilience, eco-resilience, food security, energy transition, technological advancements, public health, cultural preservation, and education highlights the need for holistic and strategic solutions. These solutions should integrate principles of future ethics, sustainable development, and the science of anticipation while bridging local and global actions through glocal collaboration. By creating an inclusive platform for diverse stakeholders, this conference aims to harness collective expertise and catalyze innovative solutions to strengthen resilience at all levels.
Urban resilience is a fundamental aspect of addressing the challenges faced by cities, which are increasingly impacted by natural disasters, climate crisis, and socio-economic inequalities. By encouraging inclusive urban planning, sustainable infrastructure, and participatory governance, cities can transform into hubs of innovation and adaptability. Additionally, eco-resilience highlights the essential need for ecosystems to adapt and sustain themselves amid environmental degradation and resource depletion. Together with social and economic resilience, these components create an integrated framework that empowers societies to tackle the complexities of future challenges.
Education is seen as a powerful tool for fostering resilience, inspiring innovation, and building ethical foundations. It enables individuals and communities to develop the skills and values needed to tackle systemic challenges, adopt adaptive solutions, and actively contribute to sustainable development. By promoting equity, justice, and intergenerational responsibility, we ensure that resilience strategies are inclusive and benefit both present and future generations.
Johan Galtung’s concepts of negative and positive peace provide the foundation for exploring resilience as a pathway to world peace. Negative peace focuses on addressing immediate threats such as resource scarcity and environmental crises, whereas positive peace emphasizes creating structural conditions that foster long-term equity, justice, and harmony. By adopting this dual framework, the event highlights resilience as a critical tool for mitigating risks and building sustainable systems that ensure societal and ecological well-being.
As a collaborative platform, this international conference brings together diverse stakeholders, including governments, academic institutions, civic organizations, and the private sector. It promotes interdisciplinary dialogue and fosters partnerships to bridge divides across sectors and regions. The ultimate aims are to generate actionable solutions and encourage capacity-building efforts that are both locally relevant and globally impactful.
Resilience is viewed in this conference not merely as a response to present-day challenges but as a strategic approach to achieving a peaceful and sustainable global future. By integrating urban, ecological, social, and economic resilience into cohesive strategies supported by global and local collaboration, the initiative aims to chart a course for systemic solutions that balance human development with ecological integrity. Through collective efforts, participants will contribute to shaping innovative practices and policies that advance resilience and foster a harmonious global order.
